Cool quote: "I would show my my jobs to my mother, and she would always say the same thing: “That’s nice dear.” And then she would say, “Did you write it?” or “Did you do the drawing?” or “Did you take the pictures?” I’d always answer “no,” then I realized the problem. My answer was then, “I made this happen. It’s called design.”

WEEK 3 - Sept 16 - 20

Monday: Layout exercise continued.

Visual Hierarchy - When you look at a design you tend to read things in a particular order. That order in determined visually using variations in scale, value, color, spacing, placement, and other signals. The most important information should be read first, second most important second, etc.

Read this from Vanseo Design, (if words are underlined and red or blue click on it.Blue is required reading, red is optional : )

and this from Web Style Design,

and even this about El Lissitzky,

Hierarchy exercise 1:

Copy the following text:

The one who follows the crowd will usually get no further than the crowd.
The one who walks alone is likely to find himself in places no one has ever been.
Peninsula High School

We will go over how to do this in class.

Hierarchy exercise 3:

Take facts about you: name, age, birthday, address, favorite color, height, hobbies, etc.

Wednesday: Designing with a grid:

Designing with a grid: Order out of Chaos ,Consistency and Unity , The Grid System

Look at the illustration below. The top example was arranged using a grid and the bottom one without a grid. Grids are used to organize bits of information. The boxes in the example could be boxes of text or images. A grid arranges all of the elements of the design to create an organized composition. A grid creates order out of chaos. It imposes consistency and unity.

grid

Grid exercise 1: Make a letter sized document. Create a variety of boxes like the exaple above. Line them up using a grid. I'll show you how in class.

Grid exercise 2: Make a letter sized document. Add some images about the same size as the boxes. Also add text boxes with random text. Use the text boxes just as you would the shapes. Line them up using a grid. I'll show you how in class.

Thought for the day: Less is More - Watch this video. Then watch it again. Believe everything he says. Remember, If words are underlined and red or blue it is a link, click on it.Blue is required reading, red is optional.
